The day is not far when trains will run between India and Bhutan. For this, an important agreement has been signed between the two countries. Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Bhutan on Friday. PM Modi and Bhutan's Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay signed many important agreements between India and Bhutan, in which the agreement related to rail connectivity was finalized.

The Indian Foreign Ministry said that both sides have "agreed and signed an MoU in this regard" on rail connectivity between India and Bhutan. The MoU provides for two rail routes between India and Bhutan, Kokrajhar-Gelephu and Banarhat-Samtse.

The Kokrajhar-Gelephu rail route is likely to start first. A 57.5 km long railway line will be laid between Kokrajhar in Assam and Gelephu in Bhutan. The construction of this railway line is estimated to cost around Rs 100 crore. In August last year, External Affairs Minister Jaishankar had said that the survey on the Kokrajhar-Geluphu route has been completed in April 2023 to start the construction of the railway link between India and Bhutan.

Tourism and trade will get a boost
The commencement of operation of trains on this railway line will boost both trade and tourism between India and Bhutan. This railway route will open new doors of possibilities for Assam. Bhutan is very keen to open more and more centers for tourists.

Indian government will lay the line
This 57 km long railway link connecting Gelephu of Bhutan and Kokrajhar of Assam, India will be constructed by the Government of India. The train on this route will be operated by North Eastern Frontier (NF) Railways. It is expected that the construction of the railway line will start soon and it will be ready by 2026.

Talks have been going on since 2018
Both the countries have been in talks since 2018 to establish rail link between India and Bhutan. Now after five years, both the countries have officially signed an agreement for this. After starting the rail service between Gelephu and Assam, there are plans to connect many more places with railways.
